French road trip sparks new cheeses

Exciting times lie ahead here at Caws Cenarth with a new range of cheeses in the pipeline.

Dairy owner Carwyn and his son Lucas have just returned from a three-week road trip to France and the pair are now brimming with fresh ideas.

They made the 17-hour drive from here in West Wales to the Haute-Savoie region of France, close to the Swiss border and Geneva, in a Land Rover they recently restored.

“It was a bit of an adventure in the Land Rover and we could not do much more than 60 mph in the old girl,” said Carwyn.

But once they arrived, Carwyn and Lucas were registered for an intensive cheese course, which included visiting several dairies producing fantastic Alpine cheeses such as Comté, Reblochon and Abondance.

“Seeing what the French were making and the quality of the cheeses was a real treat and has inspired me. Work is now underway to convert an old cheese vat to produce our own Alpine-style cheese,” says Carwyn.

“We are really excited about this project and can’t wait to tell you more through our various media channels.”

That sounds like an incredible adventure, Carwyn and Lucas! A road trip through the heart of Alpine cheesemaking must have been an inspiring experience—what a fantastic way to bring new ideas back to Caws Cenarth. Can’t wait to see how your Alpine-style cheese develops and how it blends with your rich Welsh cheesemaking heritage. Wishing you all the best with the new range—exciting times ahead indeed!
